WHAT IS A CERTIFIED FAMILY LAW SPECIALIST?
In order to be identified as a "certified" specialist in California, an attorney must be certified either by The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization, or an organization whose certification program has been accredited by the State Bar, and which is at least equally demanding as the State Bar.

California attorneys certified as specialists must pass a written examination in their specialty field, demonstrate a high level of experience in the specialty field, fulfill ongoing education requirements and be favorably evaluated by other attorneys and judges familiar with their work.

An applicant must demonstrate that, within the five years immediately preceding submission of the written application, he or she has been substantially involved in the practice of family law, which shall include actual experience in each of the following areas:

  • Restraining orders/domestic violence proceedings;
  • Dissolution of marriage, legal separation, or nullity of marriage litigation;
  • Custody of children
  • Child support;
  • Spousal support;
  • Modification of support;
  • Division of community property;
  • Confirmation of separate property;
  • Taxation issues incident to dissolution of marriage;
  • Contempt and/or enforcement proceedings;
  • Mediation and/or negotiation of family law disputes; and
  • Psychological and counseling aspects of dissolution of marriage
