Maria Hamar represents both men and women in divorce, asset division, child custody and support matters. Her clients are most often professionals, successful business owners and their spouses. She also represents domestic partners. Maria Hamar prepares premarital, marital and cohabitation agreements. She represents individuals who wish to modify a past order entered by the Court, as well as those that wish to enforce those orders. Maria has represented clients in international abduction cases and Hague kidnapping cases in the family courts of California, as well as appeals.Before becoming a family law attorney she was involved in comp ligation in federal court.She was also involved in state and federal criminal cases.She was also involved in state and federal criminal cases.

. Maria Hamar believes that being fully informed of the facts of the case is essential to the advice she provides and the protection of the rights of the client. She uses her clients as well as discovery techniques, investigators and experts to obtain and present this information. Maria Hamar believes in moving immediately to protect the personal and property rights of the client, utilizing restraining orders and thereafter using orders to show cause and for contempt to follow through with court protection. In cases involving substantial litigation she works with associates whom she chooses.


Maria Hamar understands the emotional upheavals of clients suffering through family law matters and compassionately works with her client, while providing the comfort that there is someone who is staunchly protecting their interests. She practices consistent and clear communication with her clients and opposing counsel, documenting every important communication.

In dealing with the lawyers on the other side, Maria Hamar believes in using a cool headed,strong, professional, assertive and firm approach.She is not intimated by bullying tactics .

Many cases are resolved through settlement by identifying all of the assets, issues and advocating strong, fair and creative solutions. However where  litigation is the way to proceed, Ms. Hamar is confident that over twenty-five years in the courtroom has given her the experience and confidence to succeed at trial.

 
 
WHAT IS A CERTIFIED FAMILY LAW SPECIALIST?
In order to be identified as a "certified" specialist in California, an attorney must be certified either by The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization, or an organization whose certification program has been accredited by the State Bar, and is at least equally demanding as the State Bar.

California attorneys certified as specialists must pass a written examination in their specialty field, demonstrate a high level of experience in the specialty field, fulfill ongoing education requirements and be favorably evaluated by other attorneys and judges familiar with their work.

An applicant must demonstrate that, within the five years immediately prceding submission of the written application, he or she has been substantially involved in the practice of family law, which shall include actual experience in each of the following areas:


  • Restraining orders/domestic violence proceedings;
  • Dissolution of marriage, legal separation, or nullity of marriage litigation;
  • Custody of children
  • Child support;
  • Spousal support;
  • Modification of support;
  • Division of community property;
  • Confirmation of separate property;
  • Taxation issues incident to dissolution of marriage;
  • Contempt and/or enforcement proceedings;
  • Mediation and/or negotiation of family law disputes; and
  • Psychological and counseling aspects of dissolution of marriage

Maria R. Hamar is in the elite group of Certified Family Law Specialists.   Maria also brings, besides her specialization in family law, the skill and experience of jury trials (jury trials are not permitted in family law cases) against the most difficult opponents all over the country.
